Liberty Coin Service has operated from Lansing, Michigan since 1971. That makes it one of the older dealers in this review series, and by its own description, Michigan’s largest rare coin and precious metals dealer. It carries gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and pre-1933 U.S. gold. It has four Professional Numismatic Guild members on staff — one of only a handful of companies in the world with that distinction. The physical store at 400 Frandor Ave has been a Lansing institution for over five decades.

Our #1 Rated Gold Company for 2026

Liberty Coin Service does not set up Gold IRAs. If your goal is a self-directed IRA rollover, Noble Gold Investments handles the full process and offers a free guide before you commit any retirement funds.

The IRA picture here is similar to AJPM and Colorado Gold: Liberty Coin Service sells IRA-eligible bullion at competitive prices, but it does not set up IRA accounts, does not partner with custodians, and does not arrange depository storage. If you already have a self-directed IRA and want a Midwest-based dealer with genuine numismatic depth, Liberty Coin Service is worth a call. If you’re starting from scratch on the IRA side, this is not the right first stop.

Fifty-Four Years and Four PNG Members: What That Actually Means

Liberty Coin Service opened its doors in 1971, two years prior to when owning gold bullion became legal once more in America. The company established its roots in rare coin dealing and numismatics well before the existence of the modern precious metals IRA. This gives the company its distinct flavor of operation.

It is important to note that Liberty Coin Service employs four PNG professionals. PNG has a rigorous membership requirement where ethics and skill come into play. Most companies can count themselves lucky if they have a single member. Being able to boast four, namely Pat Heller, Allan Beegle, Tom Coulson (CEO), and Paul Manderscheid, makes Liberty Coin Service quite unique on a global scale. The About section mentions it.

Another impressive affiliation that Liberty Coin Service takes part in is the Industry Council for Tangible Assets board of directors, or ICTA. It is an organization that supports the interests of the precious metal dealers in Washington. Many employees of Liberty Coin Service are ANA life members. Again, no marketing tricks but actual affiliations.

However, aside from precious metals, Liberty Coin Service is also known for being the largest foreign currency exchange dealer in Lansing. Local banks and credit unions send their clients there in order to exchange foreign currencies. Additionally, Liberty Coin Service is the first ever “Precious Metal and Gem buyer” licensed by the Lansing Police Department.

My Quick Verdict

A good fit if: you want to buy IRA-eligible bullion from a deep, long-established dealer with genuine numismatic expertise, you’re in the Michigan area, or you already have a self-directed IRA and want to source metals from a dealer with real credentials.

A weaker fit if: you need a dealer to set up your IRA, you want online ordering for bullion, or you need a dealer with a large consumer review presence.

My take: Liberty Coin Service is one of the most credentialed dealers in this review series on the numismatic and institutional side. The IRA limitation is real — this is not a Gold IRA company, it’s a bullion dealer that can supply metals to your existing IRA. If you need both the IRA infrastructure and the metals in one place, look at the full-service companies in this series.

The Catalog

The live website shows four metals — gold, silver, platinum, and palladium — plus a dedicated Pre-1933 U.S. Gold section. The gold catalog alone has sixteen product categories. That’s broader than most dealers in this series.

Liberty Coin Service does not accept online orders for gold bullion. Pricing is on the Daily Quotes page and orders require a phone call to lock in a price. Coins and currency can be purchased through the online store.

The IRA Arrangement: What Liberty Coin Service Does and Doesn’t Do

Liberty Coin Service also sells IRA-qualified precious metals. It neither sets up IRAs nor works with custodians. It does not provide for any storage at depositories either.

Specifically, this implies that if one has a self-directed IRA with any custodian, such as GoldStar Trust, Equity Trust or New Direction IRA, one will simply instruct his custodian to purchase certain precious metals from Liberty Coin Service and store them at the selected depository.

If you’re starting from scratch — no self-directed IRA, no custodian, no depository — you’ll need to sort that out before Liberty Coin Service becomes useful for IRA purposes. See our guides on self-directed IRAs and top self-directed IRA companies for the custodian piece.

For a dealer that handles both the IRA setup and the metals acquisition together, see the full-service IRA companies in this series: Noble Gold Investments, Augusta Precious Metals, or Advantage Gold.

What Makes Liberty Coin Service Worth Knowing About

👍 Four PNG members employed as staff

By far the most unique credential in this review series. PNG membership requires both expert qualifications and adherence to high standards of conduct that very few dealers ever meet. Liberty Coin Service has four. In the rare coin market, with rare coins, pre-1933 gold, and numismatics in general, where the degree of expertise has direct bearing on what one pays and receives, this means a lot more than nearly anything else.

👍 Most extensive range of gold products offered in this series

Sixteen product categories, ranging from U.S. Arts Medallions to Austria 100 Corona, China Gold Panda, Mexico Gold 50 Peso, and 1 oz and Valcambi 50g Combibar versions along with standard IRA bullion. Liberty Coin Service has a greater likelihood of having something out of the ordinary than many of its competitors.

👍 Education resources of value

The Learning Center and the newsletters represent actual content. This isn’t marketing fluff under the guise of education. It’s educated commentary from an authorship comprising several ANA life members and people who have contributed content to numismatic reference materials.

Where the Model Has Real Gaps

👎 No IRA services, custodian, or depository

The most consequential limitation for most readers of this review. Liberty Coin Service will not walk you through the IRA setup process. If that’s what you need, this is the wrong first call. See our Gold IRA rollover pros and cons guide before deciding which type of dealer to approach first.

👎 No option to order bullion products online

Bullion orders require making a phone call to lock in pricing. Only coins and currency can be ordered via website. Those customers who are interested in completing an entire transaction without contacting a representative, online, will run into problems with this limitation.

👎 Not BBB accredited, very limited consumer reviews online

Not being accredited by the Better Business Bureau and having a low number of reviews is not ideal. Investors who depend on third-party opinion volume for assessing the quality of their dealers will not find much material here. Based on the positive testimonial on the homepage and decades-old, consistent customer base, the operation appears to be legitimate, however, please check BBB and Yelp listings now rather than relying on article counts.

How Liberty Coin Service Fits Into a Comparison

Liberty Coin Service’s closest structural peers in this series are AJPM (Portland’s Colorado-style bullion dealer with published pricing) and Colorado Gold (same no-IRA, published-price model). Its numismatic depth puts it closer to USAGOLD on the collector dimension. The key difference from all of them: Liberty Coin Service has the deepest credential stack in terms of institutional memberships and staff expertise.

  • Noble Gold Investments — our #1 rated company for 2026; full IRA service; free guide
  • Colorado Gold — closest model; published pricing; no IRA; no custodian compensation
  • AJPM — similar model; live two-way pricing; Portland-based
  • CMI Gold & Silver — published IRA fees; non-commission brokers; has a named custodian
  • USAGOLD — similar vintage dealer with historic coin dimension; offers IRA services

What to Confirm Before Placing an Order

  • Is the product I want IRA-eligible investment-grade bullion or a numismatic/collectible coin?
  • What is today’s ask price for the specific product, and how does it compare to the daily quote on the website?
  • Will my IRA custodian support a purchase from Liberty Coin Service, and what is the process for directing the custodian to fund the purchase?
  • Is palladium currently in stock in the format and weight I want?
  • What are the buyback terms for the specific products I’m purchasing?

Final Verdict

Liberty Coin Service is one of the most institutionally credentialed dealers in this review series. Four PNG members, ICTA board representation, over 50 years in business, and the deepest gold catalog of any Michigan dealer are real things. The testimonial on the homepage describes fast shipping, perfect condition orders, and competitive pricing. That’s consistent with what you’d expect from a company that has been doing this since 1971.

The IRA limitation is equally real. This is not a Gold IRA company. It’s a bullion dealer with depth. Investors who already have their IRA infrastructure in place and want a credentialed Midwestern source for metals have a strong reason to include Liberty Coin Service in their comparison. Investors who are starting from scratch on the IRA side need to establish their custodian and depository first.

One practical note: call on the corrected number, (800) 527-2375, not the old number in some older review sources. Check the Daily Quotes page before calling to know what the spread looks like on the products you want. And if anyone recommends numismatic or pre-1933 coins, confirm the IRA eligibility and the premium over spot before agreeing to a purchase.

Review Summary :

Founded in 1971, Liberty Coin Service is one of the oldest precious metals bullion dealers in the country. It has a varied selection of items in its inventory, including several popular coins and bars eligible to be held in a self-directed IRA. Unfortunately, the catalog does not provide online pricing for the products. Likewise, those investors looking for palladium will have to look elsewhere. Despite being listed as an option in the catalog, there doesn't appear to be any available palladium in the inventory.
