Legacy Coins & Capital is a Hauppauge, New York precious metals dealer and coin company founded in 2006 by Bruce Gordon, Anthony Grillo, and Howard Frydman. Between them, the three principals bring decades of numismatic and precious metals industry experience. The company has an extensive catalog of gold and silver coins across multiple international mints, pre-1933 U.S. gold, collectibles, PCGS and NGC certified coins, and IRA-eligible bullion. It holds BBB A+ accreditation. Its customer reviews are consistently positive.

Our #1 Rated Gold Company for 2026

Before going further with Legacy Coins & Capital, understand the IRA custodian issue explained below. Noble Gold Investments handles the full IRA process with currently active custodians and offers a free guide before you commit.

There is one issue that needs to be stated plainly before anything else: Legacy Coins & Capital’s IRA page names Sterling Trust Company as its custodian partner. Sterling Trust is permanently closed. The IRA page has not been updated since 2016 and still instructs investors to open accounts with a company that no longer exists. If you are considering a Gold IRA through Legacy Coins & Capital, your first call should be to confirm which custodian they are currently working with. Do not open an account or initiate any rollover until you have a current, named, operational custodian confirmed in writing.

That issue aside, the dealer side of the business — the coins, the numismatic expertise, the buy/sell program — is a different matter and worth evaluating on its own merits.

If you are still early in your research, you may also want to read our guides to precious metals investing, Gold IRA rollover pros and cons, and where Gold IRA metals should be stored, so you can judge Legacy Coins & Capital in the right context.

The Team Behind the Company: Three Decades of Numismatic Experience

Bruce Gordon has been president since 2009 and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1973. Anthony Grillo and Howard Frydman round out the founding leadership team. All three are confirmed as owners and active principals.

The Sell Your Coins page describes their background plainly: “Our many years of experience in both the retail and wholesale Rare Coin and Precious Metals Markets allows us to offer the finest service and selection of rare coins available today.” The company carries PCGS and NGC certified coins, which requires relationships with those grading services and demonstrates coin authentication expertise that most bullion-only dealers don’t have.

Customer reviews focus heavily on the knowledge of the staff when evaluating collections, fair buy-side pricing, and the overall transparency of the buying and selling process.

My Quick Verdict

A good fit for direct purchases if: you want a numismatically sophisticated New York dealer with a wide gold and silver catalog, pre-1933 gold, and certified coins.

A weaker fit for IRAs until: you have confirmed by phone which active custodian the company is currently working with and have received all current fee information in writing.

My take: The dealer side of Legacy Coins & Capital has real credentials. The IRA infrastructure has a significant outdated documentation problem that creates genuine risk for investors. Don’t rely on the IRA page. Call first.

The Sterling Trust Problem: What Investors Need to Understand

Sterling Trust Company was an IRA custodian operating in Texas that had been founded in 1984. After Legacy Coins & Capital published their IRA page in 2016, Sterling Trust stopped functioning. They do not administer any accounts anymore.

Unfortunately, Legacy Coins & Capital did not update their IRA page since Sterling Trust Company went bankrupt. Thus, their IRA page still has all the instructions for opening a Sterling Trust IRA account and completing Sterling Trust forms. Furthermore, you can find the directions on how to request Sterling Trust to send funds to purchase precious metals. This procedure will not work because Sterling Trust is out of business.

How it affects potential customers: by following these instructions you will attempt to open an account with a company that is out of business. Moreover, the custodian fee ($65 per year) as well as the storage fees in Delaware Depository ($100 per year) listed on the IRA page of Legacy Coins & Capital refer only to the Sterling Trust IRA custodian.

What needs to be done: contact Legacy Coins & Capital customer support at (800) 766-2780 and ask which IRA custodian they are using now. If they name an active, operational custodian, ask for the full current fee schedule from that custodian in writing. If they do not have a current custodian in place, the IRA service is effectively inactive.

For comparison dealers with current, named, active custodian partnerships, see our reviews of USAGOLD (Equity Trust), CMI Gold & Silver (GoldStar Trust), and Advantage Gold (STRATA Trust and Equity Trust).

The Catalog: Where Legacy Coins & Capital Actually Shines

The catalog is extensive and genuinely varied. Gold alone spans six international mints plus pre-1933 U.S. gold and First Spouse coins. Silver includes multiple RCM specialty series, Armenian Noah’s Ark coins, and U.S. commemoratives. PCGS and NGC certified coins appear throughout both precious metals and numismatic sections.

IRA-Eligible Gold

  • Gold American Eagle (all sizes)
  • Gold American Buffalo
  • Gold Canadian Maple Leaf (including .99999 pure RCM coins)
  • Gold Austrian Philharmonic

  • South African Gold Krugerrand
  • Mexican Gold Libertad and Gold Peso
  • Gold Sovereign

IRA-Eligible Silver

  • Silver American Eagle

  • Silver Austrian Philharmonic
  • Silver Britannia
  • Armenian Noah’s Ark silver coins (1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and larger)

Non-IRA Products

  • Pre-1933 U.S. gold: Dedicated catalog section with a wide range of historic American gold.
  • PCGS and NGC certified coins: Graded and authenticated coins across multiple categories. Not IRA-eligible.
  • U.S. Gold Commemoratives and First Spouse coins: Specialty U.S. Mint products. Confirm IRA eligibility for any specific coin before purchasing within a retirement account.
  • Austrian historic gold: Francs, Corona, and Ducat coins. Not IRA-eligible as collectibles.
  • RCM specialty series: Predator Series, Birds of Prey, Grey Wolf, Lunar Series, Wildlife Series. Collectibles; not IRA-eligible.

What Legacy Coins & Capital Does Well

👍 Authentic numismatic expertise with PCGS/NGC certification

The majority of precious metal dealers covered in this review series operate as bullion dealers. However, this review of Legacy Coins & Capital does include a dealer that sells authentic numismatics. Both PCGS and NGC certification require significant numismatic relationships and expertise to achieve.

👍 Principals with extensive experience in gold and coin transactions

Bruce Gordon, Anthony Grillo, and Howard Frydman are all identified as co-owners and have been in the business for many years. Positive reviews highlight personnel that knows their products well, evaluates and purchases collections fairly, and communicates pricing effectively.

👍 BBB A+ Rating

This company carries an A+ BBB rating. Visit the BBB site directly for up-to-date rating details.

👍 Extensive gold inventory from six international mints

Gold from America, Canada, Austria, England, Mexico, and South Africa in multiple denominations, including historic pre-1933 American gold and limited-edition RCM coinage.

👍 Buy/Sell program with good customer feedback

This company both buys and sells gold coins and metals. Reviews mention fair pricing, knowledgeable appraisals, and comfortable sales experience.

The Problems That Need Addressing Before Any Commitment

👎 Closed custodian named in IRA program details

Sterling Trust Company is now closed. The company’s IRA page was last updated in 2016. As a result, an investor following these details will be attempting to set up an account at a closed firm. Verify the current custodian before making any IRA moves.

👎 Limited investment metals coverage

This company covers only gold and silver bullion and coins. Investors requiring full IRS-acceptable investment metals from one source will have to buy platinum and palladium separately.

👎 No prices posted online

Price details are not available on product pages. Everything must be discussed on a call or by sending an inquiry.

👎 Website content is not consistently up to date

The IRA page, which has not been updated since 2016, is a clear example of this. It should be easy enough for a company in operation to maintain their IRA information current on their website.

How Legacy Coins & Capital Compares

On the dealer side, Legacy Coins & Capital’s closest peer is Liberty Coin Service (Lansing, Michigan — PNG members, wide catalog, no IRA setup). On the IRA side, its closest peer should be a dealer with an active, named custodian.

  • Noble Gold Investments — our #1 rated company for 2026; current custodians; full IRA service; free guide
  • USAGOLD — similar vintage dealer with numismatic dimension; Equity Trust custodian; current IRA program
  • CMI Gold & Silver — published IRA fees; GoldStar Trust custodian; non-commission brokers
  • Liberty Coin Service — most similar dealer model; deep catalog; no IRA setup

The Questions to Ask Before Committing to Anything

  • Which IRA custodian are you currently working with? (Not Sterling Trust — that company is permanently closed.)
  • What are the current custodian annual fees and storage fees at Delaware Depository for my account size?
  • What is the current pricing on the specific products I want, and how does that compare to today’s spot price?
  • Which products in your catalog are IRA-eligible investment-grade bullion, and which are collectibles that cannot be held in an IRA?
  • What are the buyback terms for the products I’m considering?

Final Verdict

Legacy Coins & Capital has built a legitimate, well-reviewed precious metals and rare coin business in Hauppauge, New York. The three principals bring genuine industry experience, the catalog is wide and numismatically sophisticated, the BBB rating is A+, and customer reviews consistently praise the staff’s knowledge and the fairness of their pricing.

The IRA situation is a serious operational problem that has not been addressed. Sterling Trust Company, the custodian named on the IRA page, is permanently closed. That page has not been updated in almost a decade. Any investor who wants a Gold IRA through Legacy Coins & Capital must verify by phone which active, current custodian the company is working with before proceeding.

Use Legacy Coins & Capital as a dealer for coins and bullion if the catalog and expertise match what you need. Treat the IRA page as outdated and potentially inaccurate. Call before you commit to anything on the retirement account side.
