California Numismatic Investments has been operating since 1980. Forty-five years. Made the Inc. 500 in 2005. The company is not a recent startup with a polished website and a marketing budget. It is one of the oldest, most credentialed bullion dealers in the United States.

The online presence runs through GoldDealer.com. The physical store in Inglewood, California has six live trading boards and walk-in access. Real-time quotes are available on the website. No commission on sales. Free shipping available. For investors who value longevity and principal credibility over digital polish, CNI is a strong option.

#1 Rated Gold Company for 2026

Before going further into CNI, know that our top recommendation for U.S. retirement investors in 2026 remains Noble Gold Investments. Noble Gold names its custodians and storage partners, publishes its fee structure, and assigns a dedicated IRA specialist to every account. Their free 2026 Gold IRA guide covers the full process.

CNI at a Glance

Forty-five years in business is a lot of time. For any precious metal retailer to last that long they must be able to keep things simple: good prices, and timely delivery. When it comes to IRAs, CNI does at least do the minimum well: named custodian, Equity Trust Company; named depository, CNT; direct contact with their website to establish an account. From what I found on fees in independent online resources, CNI seems to have a straightforward fee schedule. But, as always, it’s wise to inquire directly from Equity Trust as custodian fee schedules tend to vary over time and the numbers I’ve found may be outdated.

CNI’s lack of online reviews is a bit surprising for such an established company. There is next to nothing about this firm online in regards to customer reviews. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. This company, it appears, earned its reputation the hard way — by building relationships with clients and gaining recognition from within. But for someone who values a public opinion prior to reaching out — there simply isn’t much data available.

Pros & Cons

✅ What Works in CNI’s Favor❌ Where CNI Falls Short
45 years in continuous operation since 1980 — one of the oldest precious metals dealers in the countrySome IRA-eligible products marked as Sold Out on the website — verify availability before initiating an account around specific products
Named on Inc. magazine’s Inc. 500 list in 2005 as one of America’s fastest-growing private companiesIRA fee schedule requires verification directly with Equity Trust — fees listed in some sources may be outdated
Quoted as a source by CNN, CNBC, and PBS for precious metals market commentary — verifiable external recognitionVery thin third-party consumer review presence on major platforms despite 45 years of operation
Named custodian (Equity Trust Company) and named depository (CNT Depository) both publicly disclosed
Physical walk-in store in Inglewood, California with six live trading boards and private parking

BBB A+ rating with a clean complaint record; Ripoff Report has no filings

IRA Custodian and Storage

Custodian: Equity Trust Company

CNI has partnered with Equity Trust Company for providing custodial services for IRAs. Equity Trust Company is perhaps one of the oldest and most experienced firms providing self-directed IRA administration services in America, having assets valued at around $34 billion and being more than 45 years old. The site of CNI has provided a direct link to the account opening page of Equity Trust. Get the current annual fee structure of Equity Trust from independent sources.

Our self-directed IRA guide covers what to look for in any custodian.

Depository: CNT Depository

CNT Depository of Bridgewater, MA, USA is the storage service provider of choice at CNI. It is 63,000 square feet in size with vaults rated Class 3 according to the UL rating system. Precious metals will be stored in segregated storage. Insurance is fully covered with Lloyd’s of London. CNT Depository is among the most widely recognized vaulting providers in the US precious metal market. For context on evaluating any depository, see our gold storage vaults guide.

Products Available

The range of offerings at CNI is extensive – gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in coins and bars, rhodium bullion bars, rare certified U.S. coins, and limited mintage bullion. Live quotations can be obtained online. Products that are eligible for IRA and which display Sold Out status should be verified before account opening.

Noble Gold Is Our #1 Pick for 2026

CNI brings 45 years of operating history, a named custodian, a named depository, and one of the most credentialed principals in the retail precious metals space. The gaps are limited online presence and some out-of-stock IRA products. For investors who want maximum guided support and upfront fee clarity, Noble Gold Investments covers more ground. Their free guide takes minutes.

Who CNI Is Best Suited For

Worth a Closer Look If You Are:

  • An investor who values 45 years of operating history and a principal with genuine industry credentials — not a marketing biography
  • Someone who wants real-time pricing with no commission and a free newsletter that actually analyzes the market
  • A numismatist or collector who wants rare certified U.S. coins alongside IRA-eligible bullion from one source
  • A California-area investor who values walk-in store access and face-to-face service
  • Someone comfortable with Equity Trust as custodian and CNT Depository as vault — both named and credible

Consider Alternatives If You Are:

  • Wanting current IRA fee schedules published upfront rather than requiring verification with Equity Trust
  • Looking for a high volume of third-party consumer reviews before making a decision
  • Needing a more modern, easily navigable e-commerce experience
  • Starting with a small balance where a flat annual IRA fee is a significant percentage of holdings

CNI vs Other Precious Metals Companies

Noble Gold Investments is our #1 pick for 2026. Noble Gold publishes fees, names custodians and depositories, and assigns a dedicated IRA specialist. For investors who want full transparency from the outset, it remains the benchmark.

Augusta Precious Metals for investors who want the most education-intensive, premium IRA setup. Augusta goes deeper on pre-commitment education than CNI, particularly for larger rollovers.

Goldline for investors comparing nationally marketed long-running brands. CNI has more operating history and stronger principal credentials but a smaller national marketing footprint.

USAGOLD is the closest philosophical peer to CNI: both are long-established, principal-led dealers with a physical-first identity, deep numismatic knowledge, and a track record that predates the Gold IRA marketing wave. Worth a direct comparison if CNI is on your list.

GoldCore for investors focused on international custody infrastructure. CNI’s storage is domestic through CNT Depository.

Advantage Gold for rollover-focused investors who want a fully documented IRA specialist experience with published fees from the outset.

Best gold investment companies covers the full field.

CNI’s clearest advantage is principal credibility and operating history. Its main gap is the absence of published IRA fees and limited online review presence.

Final Verdict

California Numismatic Investments is also one of the best-credentialed precious metals dealers in America. Inc. 500, market source for CNN and PBS, president that authored some state legislation and co-authored the authoritative coin guide, a custodian, a depository insured by Lloyd’s, and a physical retail store with six trading boards. This is not marketing material. These are facts.

Some of the negatives listed are valid but minor. There is no independent verification possible for the fee schedule until you talk to Equity Trust. Some products in IRA are out of stock. Few customer reviews on third-party websites. Their website looks outdated relative to the more sophisticated e-commerce web portals. For those who consider credibility and track record over other features, none of these are issues.

In case you’re considering investing with California Numismatic Investments: verify their current fee schedule with Equity Trust, ensure your products are in stock, and evaluate how much more expensive the transaction will be as opposed to Noble Gold Investments before making any final decision.
